Tuesday, May 22 - Traditional Japanese Flute Concert

Experience the meditative and relaxing sounds of traditional Japan music performed on the Shakuhachi (flute). The Shakuhachi is a Japanese end-blown flute, traditionally made of bamboo. While the bamboo flute first came from China to Japan in the 6th Century, the Shakuhachi is the distinct product of hundreds of years of musical evolution. In mideival times, Shakuhachi played an important spiritual role for Fuke Zen Buddhist monks, who would travel the land playing their Shakuhachi. The first movement is a solemn piece for solo shakuhachi.
